The Philippine Archipelago comprises 7,107 islands in the western Pacific Ocean. The Philippines is the world’s 12th most populous country, with a population of 88 million. Filipinos are mostly of Austronesian descent, but there are significant American, Arab, Chinese, Hispanic and Indian minorities. There are more than 11 million overseas Filipinos worldwide, about 11% of the total population of the Philippines.

The Philippines became a Spanish colony in the 16th century, and then a U.S. colony after the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War. The Philippines has many affinities with the Western world, derived mainly from the cultures of Spain, Latin America, and the United States. Roman Catholicism became the predominant religion, although the pre-Hispanic indigenous religious practices and Islam continue to flourish. The two official languages of the Philippines are Filipino, which is based on Tagalog, and English.

China, The stalemate of the last Chinese Civil War has resulted in two political states using the name China: the People’s Republic of China (PRC), commonly known as “China,” which controls mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau; and the Republic of China (ROC), commonly known as “Taiwan,” which controls the island of Taiwan and its surrounding islands.

As the planet’s largest continent, Asia covers about 30 percent of the world’s landmass and includes (44) countries and assorted islands and/or dependencies. With almost 4 billion people, it contains more than 60% of the world’s current human population. It is bounded to the east by the Pacific Ocean, to the south by the Indian Ocean, and to the north by the Arctic Ocean.

Significant features of the continent of Asia include the world’s tallest mountain, Mt Everest in Nepal (and China), rising to 29,035 ft (8,850m). It also includes the world’s lowest point, found in the Dead Sea, Israel/Jordan, at 1,286 ft (392m) below sea level.

In addition, the continent includes the world’s most populated countries, China and India; the world’s longest coastline, the world’s deepest lake; Lake Baykal, and some of the most important rivers on the planet.

Given its size and diversity, Asia – a toponym dating back to classical antiquity – is more a cultural concept incorporating a number of regions and peoples than a homogeneous physical entity (see Subregions of Asia, Asian people). From the standpoint of physical geography, Europe and Asia are considered parts of the single continent or supercontinent of Eurasia.
